1960s

UWI Credit Union started its operations in December 1965, and was registered with the Department of Co-operatives in September 1966.

UWI Credit Union grew out trade union roots in the persons of Beryl Drakes and Grace Young.

The key actors in UWI Credit Union in 1965 were Mr. Sankar [President], Mr. S. La Veau [Vice-President], Ms. I. Regis [Secretary], Mr. F. des Vignes [Assistant Secretary], Mr. H. Lancaster [Treasurer], Mr. G. Young, Ms. S. Norman and Ms. S. La Veau..

The first administrative was in Block A, Faculty of Engineering. Some time later, through the initiative of the late Mr. C. McEachrane, office space was provided at Works Department compound and the registered office was moved to that location.

1970s

UWI Credit Union went through a period of crisis in the 1970s but recovered.

Two stalwarts, John Nicholson and Milton Meyers took on the mantle of keeping the Credit Union alive during the late 70s and early 80s.

1980s In the 80s some of the members of the management team were: Mrs. Jill Thompson, Ms. Stephanie Pile, Dr. W. Mellowes, Mr. Vibert Medford, Mr. Claude McEachrane, Mr. Jerris Attzs, Mr. Kelvin Harper, Mrs. Katherine Lowe, Mr. M. Meyers, Mr. Ivan Williams, Mr. J. Nicholson, Mr. U. Brian , Mr. E. Prescott, Mrs.G. Malwar, Mr. O. Blandin, H. Meyers, H. Noel.

1984 was the first time dividend payment was made to members.

In 1986 new bye-laws were accepted, which widened the qualifications for membership to include spouses and children of members.

The first issue of the UWI Credit Union newsletter was in 1986. The Education Committee headed by Dr. W. Mellowes continued production of the newsletter in addition to organizing Calypso Competitions, Family Day and Educational Seminars.

In 1987 the UWI Credit Union welcomed Curtis and Chester Bowles, sons of Sonia Bowles as its first children members.

In the late 80s the Credit Union also participated in music, drama and dance activities, the highlight of which was the recording of the Credit Union Song by the UWI Credit Union Choir and their performance at the Caribbean Conference of Credit Unions on CARICOM night in Grenada

1990s The UWI Credit Union hired its first full-time manager.

The Credit Union started awarding Common Entrance Examination Grants (1997) and membership bursaries for tertiary level education.

2000 onwards

The UWI Credit Union acquired its own building and opened its doors to its membership in January 2000.

In 2004 membership was further expanded to include graduates of the University of the West Indies and staff of approved tertiary level institutions.

The thrust of the business ethos for the new millennium is to offer the membership first-class financial products and services.
